Communication skills are crucial for most professionals, and yet many confess that negotiating— a high-impact communication activity— is either a weakness or an object of dread. Getting to Yes is an excellent guide to help you level up your negotiation skills and reframe negotiation as more of a principled (and often opportunity-rich) practice of collaboration.
I normally offer pros and areas of opportunity in reviews, but for this book I really only have pros:
The strategy and tactics explored in the book are succinct and well-organized
The examples are generally very topical and thought-provoking (i.e. non-obvious)
Every chapter provides example dialog to illustrate negotiation do’s and don’ts, which I found especially helpful
I feel like I’ve actually internalized all the strategies and tactics outlined in the book, which is fantastic
Because of the emphasis on viewing empathy as strategic and aiming for mutually satisfying outcomes, I would recommend this book not only to all professionals, but to all adults.
